Sleep Abnormality Disorders

Sleep abnormality disorders are part of primary disorder that is further subdivided into two fractions. These fractions are dyssomnias and parasomnias. In dyssomnias, a person feels abnormality in quality and timing of sleep and is not able to take a restful sleep. In the other fraction by the name of parasomnias, the person is troubled by the abnormal psychological and behavioral events as night sweats, night terrors and restless legs syndrome. The person normally experiences these abnormal events during his sleep and often wakes up in between. The stage in which this happens to the person is known as sleep wake transitions. Sleep abnormality disorders can trouble the person of any age group. However, in case of children or teenagers, the parents should maintain a sleep diary for about 2 weeks. The diary will help them to record the changes in the sleep of the child thereby enabling them and the doctor to analyze the case in a more clear way. It will provide information about the child’s difficulty with behavioral interventions and its response to the treatment.

To get rid of sleep abnormality disorders, it is essential to maintain a good sleep environment and no distractions such as phone, television should be around the patient. He must lie on the bed in the right sleep position. All these are the ways to prevent the symptoms from occurring. Dyssomnias is characterized by primary insomnia and hypersomnia. Most of the patients suffering from primary insomnia are not able to maintain sleep. Other type of insomnia that is chronic insomnia results in poor concentration and lack of energy in the patient. Their sleep is never refreshing and they always experience headaches.

In primary hypersomnia, another fraction of the sleep abnormality disorders, the person sleeps more than the requirement of his or her age group. The sleep is usually for about 10 hours, which is more than average, but they still feel drowsy.  The patients never get satisfied with short naps. Few people take initiative to be diagnosed by the physician although it is essential to visit the doctor at the earliest on noticing the symptoms.
