Sleepwalking Seratonin

Sleepwalking is a disorder that is a part of NREM sleep (non rapid eye
movement) in which a person’s blood pressure and temperature begin to fall. In
relation to sleepwalking seratonin is one of the factors that play a role in NREM
sleep. This disorder is also known as somnambulism. In the normal sleep cycle,
there are different stages that vary from light sleep to deep sleep. Neurotransmitters are responsible in controlling a person while he is asleep or awake. Neurons in the brainstem produce neurotransmitters known as serotonin and norepinephrine. During the waking state, these neurotransmitters keep some part of the brain active. When a person falls asleep, the other neurons that are located at the base of the brain start working through their signals. When these neurons stop signaling, we fall into a state of drowsiness. Sleep is mainly caused because of the serotonin that is metabolized from the amino acid tryptophan. In cases of sleepwalking seratonin is seen to play an important part.

Sleepwalking is a disorder that can disturb a person at any age between 6 to 12 years and even adults too. Many symptoms can help to detect this disorder. One of the main symptoms that accompany this disorder is walking with eyes open during sleep. The person is never able to recall what has happened with him during the sleep when he awakes. He gets baffled and while sleepwalking, he will always talk about the vague things. In adults, it is caused by organic brain syndrome. The other reason can be REM behavior disorder. The person
suffering from sleepwalking does not need any treatment but in severe cases of sleepwalking seratonin uptake inhibitor has been proved useful. The patient needs support in the family. Furniture needs to be shifted to make space during a sleepwalk to prevent accidents. Staircases often prove dangerous for such people; therefore, they need to be blocked off with a gate. It is noted that short acting tranquilizers prove helpful in minimizing the occurrence of sleepwalking. Most people think that the problem will reduce with age, which is a misconception. If the person helps himself to improve his sleep cycle then he can trim down the incidence of sleepwalking.
