Treatments for Children with Insomnia

Fewer studies have been done relating to treatments for children with insomnia. Parents of children suffering from insomnia need to take medical advice at the earliest. A child may be undergoing stress, which parents are not able to figure out. Children usually have behavioral problems and may need behavioral therapy. Medicines too are in use for treatments for children with insomnia. But, FDA does not approve of medicines and drugs, although medicines have miraculous effects on children. One such effective medicine is benzodiazepine flurazepam (Dalmane). There are various effective antihistamines too. For instance, Trimeprazine is one such antihistamine that is useful in treatment of children with insomnia. Short-term or transient insomnia that occurs due to mood swings or medication can be treated with benzodiazepines. But, long term medication for sleep disorders in children is rarely found.

Ignoring the symptoms of insomnia in your child may lead to severe problems such as cardiovascular disease, stress, kidney problems and problems relating to digestion. If you desire that treatments for children with insomnia should to be effective, then determine the exact symptoms. Each kind of behavior or symptom requires distinct treatment. Parents should ensure that the child follows a fixed schedule related to his routine and sleeping habits. A regular sleep schedule should be prepared, and parents should see that the child goes to bed accordingly. It should also be ensured that the child does not take naps during the day. Children with insomnia should desist from watching TV or listening to
foot-stomping music before going to bed. However, soft and soothing music at low volume does promote sleep. Caffeinated drinks and stimulating activity should be avoided in the evening. It will be useful to prepare a proper timetable, along with a proper diet chart for your child. Involve your child in maintaining these. You will soon find improvement in the sleep pattern of the child and he may be cured in due course.
